Walking a Labyrinth (Part 2)

by Dr. Karen Oliveto, Pastor

In my first blog entry, I talked about what it was like to walk a labyrinth in Freedom Hall with members of GLIDE’s Women’s Center. The experience was very powerful, and I have continued to reflect on it.

There were six of us walking the labyrinth that day. Six women making individual, solitary journeys to herself and then out into the world again. What moved me deeply was the way, as I walked, I would find myself walking shoulder to shoulder with someone for a short while, and then, suddenly, she would turn as with the path’s curve. Or I would brush up against someone as we passed each other, only to walk side by side as my path curved.

This is just like life itself! People come and go in our lives–we have the privilege of walking together for awhile, and then one of our roads turn and we are no longer walking together. Or we pass each other, a fleeting connection as eyes lock, sharing mutual humanity for even the briefest of moments, yet it is life-giving, leaving a lasting impression.

As diverse as our paths, they all lead to the same place, as the labyrinth revealed: we all can make it to the center, the place of Community, of Love, of Wholeness. It is with this deep connection that we are sustained to venture out into the world again.

GLIDE is like a human labyrinth. So much humanity, all on a road to recovery where our humanness is made whole, where love and acceptance transforms lives and communities. What a blessed journey we are on together!
