As I turn the doorknob and peer into room 504 of GLIDE, the sound of Carlos Nakai’s Native American flute songs emanate from the boombox. A crowded room at GLIDE commonly roars with commotion. Not this one. Looking around, I see people sunken in plush leather chairs, some with eyes closed, others sitting calmly, everyone in a state of relaxation. Rather than scaring people off with foreign medical supplies, acupuncturist Lara Peace uses her skills with Chinese medicine to treat the patients of GLIDE. Every Tuesday from 2:30PM to 4:30 PM, Lara Peace donates her time to bring GLIDE’s community the health benefits of acupuncture. Lara heals the mind, body, and soul with her cool demeanor and her dedication to help people live healthier. With the success of treating people for issues ranging from anxiety and depression, to back pain and muscles aches, acupuncture has quickly become a staple of wellness options at GLIDE Health Services. Does acupuncture really work? Just ask the people who return for treatment every week.
