FYCC Celebrates Mothers!

by Lucy Stelzner, Family Resource Coordinator

On Friday, May 6th, the FYCC parent leadership group held a family event to celebrate mothers. The event boasted over 75 parents and children in attendance, with 29 mothers receiving recognition through applause and a rose. It was not the excitement that floated through the air or the anticipation of the children who presented words, poems or dance thanking their mothers that made the event so successful. It wasn’t even the homemade decorations and family photos that decorated the walls, or the fried chicken and chocolate flan desserts that were rapidly consumed.

It was the parents who led this event to develop it to what it became that made it successful. It was each parent leader who helped in their different way that will etch this event into one’s memory. After the children and families left Freedom Hall that night, there echoed a sense of accomplishment that will remain long after the event is over and forgotten. What will remain are the event planning meetings that the parent leaders attended, each time Rosa and Maria accompanied me to the wholesale flower mart to research the price of roses, the streamer decorations that Magdalena and Patricia dropped off earlier in the day because they couldn’t attend that evening, and the work that each parent did to outreach to invite other families, set-up for the event and clean-up afterwards.

Through teamwork, collaboration and a small amount of organization, our parent leadership group, which was formed only four months ago, successfully celebrated the mothers that the GLIDE Family, Youth and Childcare Center serves. Our goal is to empower parents to reach their full potential and the goals they set out for themselves and their families. Hopefully our parent leadership group can be one stop on the way to realizing this dream.
