Summer in the City… and on GLIDE’s rooftop!

by Lindsey Goldberg, Graze the Roof Project Manager and Educator

The dynamics of summer season is slowly setting in; bursts of heat, and clear skies, heavy clouds, to gentle fog and light rain. In San Francisco, you never know what the summer will bring. On the rooftop of GLIDE, the dynamics of weather brings energy, nourishment and inspires vitality to the garden. In our milk crate garden beds and five gallon buckets, we are cultivating delicious, seasonal food plants, an abundance of habitat for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, birds, worms, and millions of microorganisms, as well as beauty; a place to be, to discover refugee and a place to learn, and to grow, to tend and to harvest.

Every week dedicated volunteers from all walks of life meet on the roof and passionately dig into the myriad of stewardship tasks required to keep our garden growing. From weeding to watering, from seed to harvest; we discover our strengths and cultivate new skills.

The garden is a mosaic of opportunity and a tapestry of delight, diligence and deliciousness.
This summer season we are growing dozens tomato plants, five heirloom varieties of basil, flats of mixed heirloom lettuces, carrots, strawberries, wildflowers, a wall of culinary herbs, cardoon, and brassicas galore (because we can eat kale all year long in San Francisco)!

The bee hive is buzzing, the queen is laying eggs and the workers and drones are doing their part to keep the system in balance, storing nectar, pollen and honey!

This summer we are also growing more youth education programs. Every week youth from the Family Youth and Childcare Center will get to visit and learn in the garden. We are expanding our curricular offerings in partnership with the FYCC’s teen program and will be teaching, “The Taste of Place,” a two-hour garden, cooking and nutrition series. Due to the expansion of the youth education offerings, we are changing the weekly volunteer hours to Thursdays 12 – 2pm every week, all summer long!

Join us on the first Sunday of every month for an educational tour of the garden, taste, smell, touch and experience the seasonal sweetness and appreciate the rich cultural history of this amazing urban garden in the heart of the Tenderloin. Tours meet in Freedom Hall at 10:30 and 12:30 following Sunday Celebrations.

We are also offering some GREAT workshops this summer; partnering with urban agriculture experts from all over the city to bring the GLIDE community an opportunity to enrich their connection to the garden, learn new skills, and harvest new perspectives on urban gardening:

JUNE 25th Integrated Pest Management: 9a-11a
JULY 23rd Art and Meditation in the Garden: 10a-12p

Seeing people as they are, rather than as we would like for them to be. And so that melded in my soul and in my life. And my pathway and my journey has been to say: I’m gonna be inclusive.” —Rev. Cecil Williams
