Tomatoes and Nutrition

by Kristen Growney Yamamoto, co-Executive Director

My family and I attended the Capay Heirloom Tomato Festival last weekend.  We had a fabulous day on the farm—picking fresh strawberries and herbs and sampling fresh corn and TOMATOES!  The kids liked the tractor ride and the animals. After eating unlimited strawberries all day, their favorite memory was to see the eggs that the hens lay in their ‘house’.  My husband and I loved sampling the dozens of delicious tomato varieties.  We were also thrilled for our kids to spend a day on a working farm, appreciate the taste of fresh food, and see how food is grown.

GLIDE has similar aspirations for the participants in our programs.  Volunteers already help us to grow food in our Rooftop Garden.  Kids in our Family Youth and Childcare programs (FYCC) tend, harvest and cook with the vegetables and herbs we grow.  In a joint-venture between our meals and FYCC programs, families learn how to prepare nutritious meals for their family on a limited budget.  We provide Nutritional Cooking classes monthly in English and Spanish.  The enthusiasm for these and similar offerings across GLIDE is contagious!

GLIDE’s program leadership has adopted a Nutrition theme across the organization for the upcoming year. Every division within GLIDE will touch upon nutrition for our participants and work together to coordinate, share, and reach as many of our participants as possible.  Our health clinic, for example, already runs Diabetes Education and Support Groups and provides Nutrition Counseling.  Looking forward, they will expand their technical knowledge in partnership with GLIDE’s existing programs (including Free Meals, FYCC, and Women’s Center).   We also look forward to educating those who work for GLIDE and care for the thousands of participants that GLIDE serves each year.

We are excited by the opportunities to educate, empower and collaborate with our community on this initiative.  Please join us and look for a calendar of coordinated efforts soon!

#BryanStevenson and Rev. Cecil Williams came together last night at the @jccsf. These two people know very well the "power of proximity," having dedicated their lives to working for and with some of the most disenfranchised individuals and communities in our country. Despite the pain of violence and injustice, they stress the importance of staying #hopeful and loving. GLIDE sends a special shout-out to the SF Board of Supervisors President, @londonbreed, and our District 6 Supervisor, @supejanekim, for their swift response to our call to help. When a water pressure problem threatened GLIDE's ability to serve the 2000 meals needed daily by our community, these stellar Supervisors got the problem fixed overnight! Much love and gratitude to the SF Board of Supervisors for being great partners in serving our communities! #localgov #publicservice
