3 Questions with Heather Pond, GLIDE Legacy Committee Member

Share your favorite highlight as a member of the GLIDE Legacy Committee.
Hands down the Glide Legacy Gala has been my favorite highlight. The event itself requires a lot of dedication and hard work from the committee but it’s well worth it to know we are spreading awareness about GLIDE, Cecil and Janice’s message into a new era of San Francisco. GLIDE’s combating hopelessness and despair with unconditional love and social justice. Thinking they were going to another gala, people have been pleasantly surprised by it but most importantly have been inspired to get involved, give back and spread the love.

What motivates you to donate and volunteer at GLIDE?
I know that I’m giving back to something bigger than myself that’s actually making a difference in the community. It’s incredible to see that a direct result of something I do is actually touching the lives of people that need it the most. GLIDE brings so much joy in so many ways to San Francisco and selfishly I must say the more I give the more I get. While GLIDE continues to serve to thousands of people in need and heal the community with love, it feeds my soul and inspires me to strive to be a better person.

What piece of advice would you share with fellow young professionals in the SF Bay Area about making time for community involvement in their life?
We are so lucky to live in one of the best cities in the world. Our lives are enriched by the diversity and culture but most importantly by the people. It’s time to give back to the community that’s given us so much to be happy and thankful for. To know that your actions will result in someone else’s happiness is by far one of the most rewarding feelings. Every time I volunteer I think of a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give,” so I challenge young professionals to put some thought into their happiness.

Seeing people as they are, rather than as we would like for them to be. And so that melded in my soul and in my life. And my pathway and my journey has been to say: I’m gonna be inclusive.” —Rev. Cecil Williams
