Volunteers Make the World Go ‘Round at Glide

by Alison Wisdom,  Volunteer Coordinator

From the Health Clinic to the Women’s Center, every program at GLIDE benefits from volunteer support.

“Volunteers are an integral part of our beloved community. They bring generosity, love and expertise to our program participants, church congregation, and our operations departments. In return they receive the transformative opportunity that GLIDE offers everyone, to learn to see the world differently through deep human connection, ” says Rita Shimmin, Co-Executive Director.

At GLIDE, volunteers fill a variety of roles and put their specialized skills to use in a myriad of ways. Every day volunteers are contributing to the crucial work we do. On Sundays, volunteers host the information table and sell choir CDs. On Monday and Tuesday nights, volunteers man the needle exchange in the lobby. On Wednesdays, volunteers set up for SpeakOut, the open mike night where the community is encouraged to share their stories. On Thursdays, volunteers help plant and water and weed on the rooftop garden. As the week continues, volunteers support our work at every step.

Perhaps the most well know way to volunteer at GLIDE is through our Meals Program. And indeed, without a steady stream of helping hands, the 2,500 meals we provide each day would never make it out of the kitchen. Meals volunteers come from local organizations, groups on service trips, and individuals and companies in the area looking to give back.

Seeing people as they are, rather than as we would like for them to be. And so that melded in my soul and in my life. And my pathway and my journey has been to say: I’m gonna be inclusive.” —Rev. Cecil Williams
