Soul Kitchen with Vernon Bush

In collaboration with videographer Pete Lee, GLIDE presents its Soul Kitchen video series – a project featuring people from the GLIDE community sharing their music, poetry, and simply telling their stories. The GLIDE Sanctuary serves as a backdrop for these wonderfully intimate performances. This growing documentary series illustrates the passion, vibrance, and creative diversity of the GLIDE community.

This month’s Soul Kitchen installment features Vernon Bush, singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, actor, and featured vocalist in the GLIDE Ensemble. Vernon shares his love of music not only through his performances, but through his vocal workshop, “Reclaim Your Voice.”

“If you can speak, you can sing.” Vernon shares this old African proverb with folks who shy away from singing out of fear that they lack talent. “Regardless of what others, including the voices in your head, have told you, I don’t believe people are tone deaf, there is no such thing as someone who ‘cannot sing’. There is a distinctive melody and rhythm, if you listen closely, even in plain speaking. The heart keeps a rhythm.”

“The music that I do…the music that I sing, there is a message to all of it. A lot of the words are people who come and they’re brokenhearted or disenchanted, there’s a lot of love and there’s a lot of compassion. I’m excited about how when you come to GLIDE, you feel that connection. Inside of my music, it has that connection.”

Our Harm Reduction Team always needs people to help assemble safer injection kits. Distributing these kits to our community members who inject drugs greatly reduces the spread of Hep C and HIV. It's about #publichealth and recognizing the dignity and human rights of ALL people living in our city! #harmreduction #cleansharps
