Meet Chef Kathy Fang

Shout out Chef Kathy Fang and the Fang Restaurant team! GLIDE is proud to feature Fang Restaurant as one of our Food and Beverage Sponsors at the 7th Annual GLIDE Legacy Gala on Saturday, August 13, 2016.

Kathy Fang is chef and co-owner of Fang Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco offering a fresh take on dishes influenced by both Northern and Southern China’s cuisine. Chef Fang is also the author of the popular, multifaceted food blog The daughter of famed House of Nanking or “HONK” chef/owner Peter Fang, Chef Fang has emerged from her renowned culinary family to enliven San Francisco’s food scene with her own cuisine at Fang Restaurant located in the city’s South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood. She is also a Chopped champion!

Chef Fang shares her GLIDE story as she answers our #topthree burning questions.

Q:           What does “giving back” mean to you and Fang Restaurant?

A:            Everybody has certain passions that they live for and work for. Ours at Fang happens to be about food and we are lucky enough that what we love to do has helped support our lives and the people who work at Fang. It’s nice to know we can contribute in a small way by simply doing the one thing we love, which is make food. That dish can be given to GLIDE and help support the organization and the people in it, so that they can continue to do the work that they are passionate about doing: Helping those in need in our community. It’s also important to remember that giving can be done in small and large ways. For those not in the position to give in big ways, even something small makes a difference.

Q:           What do you appreciate most about GLIDE?

A:            I would say specifically for myself, GLIDE has a really large presence in the city and especially in the Tenderloin. I remember seeing it’s presence since I was a child. The lines that would wrap around the block for those waiting to get a Thanksgiving meal or a donated X-mas gift for children in need. Their presence being so large means, anyone who comes to a point in life where they need help, they wouldn’t need to do much digging to find one. They know where to go.

Q:            GLIDE’s core value of “Celebration: We Sing. We dance. We laugh together.  We celebrate life.” resonates most with you. Why is that?

A:            This resonates the most with us, being that I’m in the food industry. And a part of what we do is celebration. We are taking ingredients and putting them together for people to enjoy. People come to Fang to celebrate things, like birthdays, promotions, retirement, weddings, etc. I also think that sometimes, it’s the ones who are experiencing despair and losses of hope in life when they need to celebrate life the most and remember what it’s like to actually be alive and find hope that they can overcome their circumstances because unless you are dead, you always still have life and that means it ain’t over yet so keep fighting.

See you on August 13th! Visit for tickets and more information!
